Artist's Description

Canberra B(I)8

Designed as the replacement for the Mosquito the B(I)8 was initially deployed in the battlefield interdiction role, fitted with 4x20mm cannon and underwing hard points for bombs, rockets and fuel tanks. Cameras were also employed for tactical battlefield recce sorties -great fun all round, low level stuff with no rules!!

With a world-wide operational role the B(I)8s made training flights ranging north/south from Bodo (Norway) to New Sarum (Rhodesia) and east/west from Hong Kong to Goose Bay (Canada).

By 1959/60 it was realised that the main nuclear strike force would have to go low-level to survive in penetrating Soviet airspace and the B(I)8 was modded to carry out nuclear LABS weapon delivery. Standing QRA guard in this mode during the height of the Cold War at bases in Germany until replaced by F4 Phantoms - the TSR2 having been disgracefully cancelled. This print is of a 59 Sqdn BI (8) en route to the weapons ranges in Libya in 1959.

About Pat Speirs

Pat Speirs

Have been interested in photography since just after WW2, when film became freely available again, using Kodak Autographic equipment. Graduated, in the 50's, to 35mm and was involved in photographic work during my 17 yrs as RAF aircrew - navigator. Since retirement and migrating to Canon digital equipment have been involved with two of my sons and one grandson in a considerable amount of photographic activity, particularly composite images. Now producing digital art prints with the major emphasis on classic warbird aviation. With son, Duncan, now becoming a well-known and published wild life photographer we have started, in 2017, a new gallery reflecting Scottish sea birds - and 'feathered' flight
