�The Hard Way�
Stricken and struggling a solitary B17 limps across the North Sea. With the Dutch coast now well behind there is only about 80 miles to go to reach the East Anglia bomber bases. Just holding altitude with one engine out - and feathered - another frozen, still smoking and with the props creating a lot of extra drag - the crew need all their energy just in keeping airborne. The B17 proved itself a rugged combat aircraft and many got home so badly damaged that they were beyond repair.
The image shows a 91st Bomb Group B17 making it�s way home �the hard way� but with moral and practical help from an RAF Spitfire who acts as shepherd and will provide a position fix should the B17 come down in the sea. A friend indeed!
