Gloster Meteor
The first jet aircraft to enter service with the RAF the Meteor first flew in 1943 and started operations in July 1944, virtually at the same time as the Me262 became operational with the Luftwaffe. Re-engined many times and converted to a variety of night fighter, training and ground attack roles the Meteor saw service well into the 1960s. Some 4,000 of this ground breaking aircraft were built and they formed the first named RAF Aerobatic team in 1952 - the Meteorites. The aircraft in the image is from 203 Advanced Flying School based at RAF Driffield in the 1950s.
