Artist's Description

Jet Age Series

F86 - Sabre - Rolling Home

The worthy successor to the Spitfire in the iconic stakes - an elegant and powerful design completely fulfilling the old adage if it looks right it flies right. Produced in 1946 and shortly afterwards found real success in combat in Korea, the Sabre served with many Air Forces, including the RAF, and was built in greater numbers than any postwar combat aircraft. Handsomely broke the then world speed record while still a standard military type. Over 9,000 of the various Mks were built and served in many conflicts throughout the world. The example in the image flies regularly in the UK and is the oldest combat jet still airworthy.

The image shows a section of Sabres heading for base at the end of a high level sortie - taking the quick way down - rolling into a split-S, power off, pull hard and last down buys the beer!.

About Pat Speirs

Pat Speirs

Have been interested in photography since just after WW2, when film became freely available again, using Kodak Autographic equipment. Graduated, in the 50's, to 35mm and was involved in photographic work during my 17 yrs as RAF aircrew - navigator. Since retirement and migrating to Canon digital equipment have been involved with two of my sons and one grandson in a considerable amount of photographic activity, particularly composite images. Now producing digital art prints with the major emphasis on classic warbird aviation. With son, Duncan, now becoming a well-known and published wild life photographer we have started, in 2017, a new gallery reflecting Scottish sea birds - and 'feathered' flight
