317 Polish Squadron
Dover - angels twenty - buster - in response to the Controllers call 317 Polish Squadron claw their way up through the murk to an interception during their spell of duty on Home Counties defence in 1942. The section of Spits is thus directed to be overhead Dover at 20,000ft as fast as possible, so to be in position to deal with an incoming Luftwaffe raid picked up on radar. In 1942 terse semi-coded commands were the norm in Control/aircrew communications and designed to get the maximum information to the pilots with the least chance of error or ambiguity - particularly important with the large number of foreign aircrew now operating up to Squadron strength.
