Description
Ju 52 - Tante Ju
The tri-motor Ju 52 was the workhorse of the Luftwaffe, operating with great distinction in all the operational areas of WW2. Some 4,500 were built serving with no less than eleven different countries air-lines. The Luftwaffe airlift capability was largely destroyed by the futile attempt to supply the German 6th Army Group surrounded in Stalingrad. Without adequate the fighter cover the Ju52, with a single 13mm hand operated gun, was completely outclassed by the Russian fighter groups and a sitting duck for the massed Russian AA. This ill-conceived operation resulted in the loss of more than 480 Luftwaffe aircraft including more than a third of the total available Ju52s.
The image shows a supply train of Ju52s, one with the hastily applied winter cammo, overseen by a weaving group of Bf 109s en-route to the Stalingrad airfields.
