Thanks Jerry, good to hear from you.

Superb work! I love the landscape below.

Pat Speirs replied:

West Germany from 1959 when serving with the RAF. Really old Kodachrome!

Quite superb - what a plane that was. Often overshadowed by the more 'glamorous' P51 the saying "If you want the girl fly a P51, if you want to get home fly a P47" was a hard won reputation.

Pat Speirs replied:

Thanks Alan - tough old bird, carrying a fearsome punch. Good to hear from you.

Artist's Description

P47 – Thunderbolt
D-Day Train-busters
A primary task during the D-day operation was to deny the German forces the ability to react quickly and move units as required. The P47 squadrons were especially suited to this mission profile and roamed all over northern France attacking rail infrastructure and train rolling stock. The weather, with low cloud and poor visibility, did not materially affect these sorties and much damage was done to the French rail system. The P47s had carried out Operation Chattanooga successfully.

About Pat Speirs

Pat Speirs

Have been interested in photography since just after WW2, when film became freely available again, using Kodak Autographic equipment. Graduated, in the 50's, to 35mm and was involved in photographic work during my 17 yrs as RAF aircrew - navigator. Since retirement and migrating to Canon digital equipment have been involved with two of my sons and one grandson in a considerable amount of photographic activity, particularly composite images. Now producing digital art prints with the major emphasis on classic warbird aviation. With son, Duncan, now becoming a well-known and published wild life photographer we have started, in 2017, a new gallery reflecting Scottish sea birds - and 'feathered' flight
