Description
‘The Russians are coming!’
The most capable of the fighter aircraft produced by the Russians in WW2 the Yak 9 flew rings around the Me109G and Fw variants from 1944 onwards. Designed from the outset to be used at lower levels the aircraft filled a variety of roles as air superiority fighter, tank buster and bomber escort. The Luftwaffe were so concerned about the Yak 9 that their pilots were encouraged to avoid combat if at all possible. Over 16,000 were produced for WW2 ops with some seeing service with the North Koreans in the 1950s. In the early 1990s Yakolev started up production again for the warbird market using Allison engines in the original design airframes.
