Description
I think we-re lost
Two Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Mustangs stuck in bad weather conditions need help to find home. The pilots have very little information to guide them as much, if not all, of navigation consisted of map reference. All they have are their compasses and radio contact, with a beady eye on the fuel remaining no GPS and elelgant homing devices. Using radio Q codes to help navigate a call to base using code QDM would gain a reply from the base with a magnetic heading to steer for the airfield, although no real estimate of distance to go would be obtained.

Beautiful and dramatic piece. I hope these guys find their way home. (I think many people forget just how many aircrews from all combatants were killed from weather-related incidents during the war.)

Thanks Douglas, good to hear from you again. You are so right about the dangers of European weather - I learned my trade as an RAF navigator in '55- '56 and often thought of the 8th USAAF boys ( and they were just that) coming straight from training in places like Texas to wrestle with typical winter skies in Northern Europe. A steep learning curve!!
