Description
Westering Home
Catalina PBY on finals close to Port Ellen, Islay, in the Scottish Western Isles, which acted as refuelling and rest station for air crews after day-long flights.
The Catalina one of the instantly recognisable icons from WW2 performed valiant service for the US forces, RAF, RCAF and the RAAF. Specialising in long range patrol operations the Catalina destroyed no less than 40 U-boats in North Atlantic operations. Also used by all the above forces for search and rescue duties, its long endurance - way in excess of 24hrs - was of particular value in the search for lost aircraft or ships crews.
The title is from the Scots song and the crews must have felt the emotion in the lyrics at the end of such sorties.
Westering Home and a song in the air
Light in the eye and its goodbye to care
Laughter o love and a welcoming there
Isle of my heart and my own one
Best sung while holding a wee dram of the single malt!!!

What a gorgeous scene.

Thanks Gary - good to hear from you - this area has had a magnificent summer this year, against all the odds. Duncan and family up there now.
