Description
Nieuport - Escadrille Lafayette
Duel in the Sun
Lit by the brilliant sunny day a lone Fokker Dr1 bumbles along, homeward bound. Stalked by the Nieuport, flown by an experienced flight leader as shown by the wing strut banners, the Fokker will have to try very hard to escape this time.
The classic approach to air combat - gain the advantage of height, position and sun glare and the quarry is yours. Most WW1, and WW2 pilots, wore loose clothing round the neck, often with a silk scarf to reduce friction, all to enable them to turn the head frequently to check behind and into the sun glare. Those who didnt learn this lesson soon fell prey as the Dr1 in the image

Gosh that blind spot was crucial to their survival! Great angles and composition! Voted and favored!

Nice angle to effectively display the lines of this aircraft. Are the WWI aircraft you are photographing reproductions or original?
Pat Speirs replied:
All reproductions with the exception of the Bristol F2b - to be posted later - I believe the last Dr1 was lost in Berlin to Allied bombing - touch of irony there! The best source is the Shuttleworth collection in UK, hope to visit again this summer when down in England for the Duxford Legends weekend. Good to 'talk' to you.........Pat
