Spitfire - Eagle Squadrons (USA) - Version with Squadron badge superimposed
Before the American entry to WW2 volunteer pilots from the USA, barred from taking part in hostilities from the US, crossed the border to Canada. Learning to fly there, with the RCAF, they eventually found their way to Britain where the RAF formed three Eagle squadrons ( 71, 121 and 133) staffed by the US volunteers. By mid 1941 the Sqyadrons were fully operational and gained their first air victory on 21 July 1941. Re-equipped with Spitfire Vb the squadron were in the thick of operations over Continental Europe. By September 1942 the US 8th Air Force was fully operational and the RAF squadrons were turned over to the USAAF as 334, 335 and 336 Squadrons, A vital part of the early stages of WW2 with a considerable cost as 77 US Eagle pilots were lost in these preliminary actions.
