Description
Douglas AD-4 Skyraider
Designed in 1944 and came in to service in late 1946 the Skyraider proved to be one of the most versatile of aircraft types. Continually developed to carry a variety of weapon loads the AD-4, nicknamed Sandy, saw extensive service in Korea and Vietnam. Serving with the French, Australian and Royal Navy forces as well as the US military the Skyraider was one of the most versatile aircraft of the era. With 4 20mm cannon and a total weapons load in excess of 8,000 lbs the Skyraider filled a multitude of low-level strike roles - and even served as a rough transport vehicle with 12 seat or four stretcher capability. Some 3,100 of all variants were built and several survive today attending the various air-show circuits all over the world.
The image shows Skyraiders of VA 155 - Silver Foxes - en-route during the Vietnam phase of their carrier operations.
