Description
Spitfire Series
September Odds
Typical of the hard days in September 1940 a lone Spitfire of 616 Sqdn has found a height and sun advantage on the group of Bf 109s. Under strict instructions to maintain cover for the bomber force only one pair of the Bf109s arc away from the formation to honour the threat.
Based at Kenley 616 was in the thick of the Battle of Britain from mid August onwards, however within two weeks the Squadron had lost over half its pilots (4 killed, 5 injured and 1 pow) and it was withdrawn to Yorkshire to reform. 616 was credited with 15 confirmed kills and 6 probables in this very short period.
