‘Red Tails’
Italy 1944. The men of the 332nd, the first African American combat pilots, would be known as the “Tuskegee Airmen.” but, in the sky, they were simply called the “Red Tails.” Based at Ramitelli the ‘red tails’ did sterling work in escort, even as far as berlin, and had the best record of all fighter outfits for success in escorting damaged bombers back to base.
