Description
The Perched advantage
Two P-47s are bounced by a Me262 on an autumn evening 1944 on their return to base from ground attack operations. Causing the two P-47s to break and dive as fast as possible. The 262 attacks from high above from the perched position above the clouds looking down for its next target. Using its advantage to surprise the two American pilots who take quick action to evade the 262 by breaking into a steep dive.
Fortunately for the Allied war effort the Me262 was late in arriving at Luftwaffe squadrons. However, in the latter stages of WW2 the jet fighter proved a powerful adversary with much superior speed and the considerable striking power of four 30mm cannon.
This P47-G flew from Duxford in 1944 with the 84th Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group. These units were deeply involved in B17 escort duties and ground attack roles racking up some 465 missions with 326 air combat kills - however at a cost of 200 combat losses and 100 pilots killed in action
