P40 Warhawk
This aircraft was operated by the 85th Fighter Squadron based in Italy during 1944. Part of the 79th Fighter Group the unit was in constant combat for many months flying from temporary fields in Egypt, Tunisia, Sicily and latterly at Capodichino, Italy. The primary operational role was low-level ground attack in support of the ground forces drive up Italy. The aircraft in the image - white X 17 en-route with his wingman - was named Lee�s Hope and �retired� after 91 missions many of them flown by Lt Robert Duffield
