Description
HS Nimrod – RAF Maritime Patrol Aircraft
‘Gone but not forgotten’
Designed to replace the aging (ancient!) Shackleton the Nimrod was the first jet powered maritime patrol aircraft. Operational from 1970 until 2010 the Nimrod was a genuine workhorse providing maritime, search/rescue, anti-submarine, electronic surveillance and intelligence gathering duties. The flexible performance capability was well illustrated during the Falklands campaign when a 19hr sortie gathered critical data about Argentine surface ship operation. The UK has been left with a gaping hole in maritime ops with the cancellation of the replacement aircraft - plus ca change!
