‘Night Hunter’
An error in weather forecast on the night of 3rd/4th May 1944 for the attack on Mailly-le- Camp resulted in the mainstream Lancasters making their way home in bright moonlit conditions. The Luftwaffe night-fighter arm made the most of the near perfect conditions and 42 Lancasters failed to return. The majority were taken down by Bf110 night-fighters recently armed with radar and upward firing 20mm cannon. The image reflects one such engagement in one of Bomber Commands worst nights..

Superb picture, Pat. Scary.
Pat Speirs replied:
Thanks Gary, the Luftwaffe was a bit sneaky with the 'schrage musik' system. A lot of the Lanc crews never knew what hit them.
