Hurricane Flight - 1940
An early morning patrol sortie climbs up through the sunlit clouds - a flight of Hurricanes adopt the new finger four formation. The RAF having learned the hard way that the pre-war rigid close formation profile was inflexible and dangerous. Often taking a back seat to the more elegant and iconic Spitfire the Hurricane was a rugged, hard hitting combat aircraft and had a better kill ratio than the Spitfire during the Battle of Britain - the image shows the flight heading for their patrol area during the bitter days of 1940.
