Fighting Colours Fokker D Vll and Nieuport 23
By 1918 the air war over Flanders had developed to the point where the opposing aircraft were seen in a bizarre mixture of flamboyant colour schemes and slightly weird camouflage. The American pilots of the Escadrille Lafayette flaunted their national heritage with the Indian head-dress while the leader of Jagdgeschwader 2, Rudolph Berthold, used his own personal emblem on his highly colourful Fokker D Vll.
The Escadrille pilots were generally absorbed into American Fighter Squadrons by May 1918, when the Fokker D.Vll came into service, carrying on the bright colour schemes with their Hat in the Ring insignia on the later Nieuports and Spads.. The image assumes a contact involving one of the erstwhile Escadrille pilots in an aircraft still sporting the Escadrille colour scheme.
