Description
B52-H - Stratofortress (BUFF)
The mighty sub-sonic bomber that has been the mainstay of the US airborne strike arm for five decades. Contracted for in 1952 and reached service in 1965 the B52 has seen active service in the Cold War, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. It has been so long in service that one US aircrew members father and grandfather also served with B52s. Though reduced in numbers from the original 740 to currently 94 the BUFF is expected to serve until the 2040s!! (BUFF - big ugly fat fella -or something similar to fella)
This example, based in Louisanna, conducted a fly-by at the Leuchars airshow this year and is caught in the September soft evening light. The colour scheme, or rather non-colour scheme, seems so muted for such an impressive aircraft - not at all in keeping with its massive weapons potential.
