Description
B17 Series
8th Air Force Icon Memphis Belle
One of the earliest B17s to deploy to Europe the Memphis Belle arrived at Prestwick on 30 September 1942. Allocated to the 324th Bomb Squadron at Bassingbourn the Belle commenced operations on 7th Nov. She completed the then required 25 missions on 19th May 1943 and returned to the States on 8th June 1943.
Placed on display in Memphis, unfortunately open to the elements she slowly deteriorated until rescued by the National Museum with a view to restoration. This is still on-going. Another B17 airframe is currently on the US display circuit, painted as the original Memphis Belle, and is the source of this image.
