Description
Shackleton MR2
While designed as a long range patrol and anti-submarine aircraft the Shack turned into a jack of all trades - and was in use all over the world - squadrons in Singapore, Aden, Malta, Gibraltar, Ireland, Cornwall, Scotland and regular detachments to Norway, Canada, Iceland and Mauritius.
Operated as anti-submarine (Arctic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean), long range surface search (the Shack had an endurance in excess of 24 hrs), colonial policing (Aden), anti-piracy (Labuan) and once, hilariously, as troop transport (Cyprus) the Shack was much loved by all crew members. Warm and comfortable, cleared for smoking and with many of our signallers experienced chefs a 20hr plus sortie was not too tough - and the last true test of traditional navigation, sextant and drift sight only!!
