P47 Thunderbolt
Top Cover
The P47s of the 82 Fighter Squadron, flying out of Duxford, provide top cover escort for the B17 Group below. Timed sometime in late 1944 - D-day stripes on the P47s - the US 8th Air Force was really getting into its stride in operations in Europe. The P47s, as rugged an aircraft as ever saw combat operations, had two distinct missions in these support sorties. One to preserve the B17 bomber fleet and, two, a roving ground attack sortie on the way back to base. Some 15,000 of the 7 ton brutes were built and maintain an enduring love from their pilots.
