Description
Westland Lysander
‘Moonlit Mission’
Originally designed in 1934 for the Army cooperation role the Lysander incorporated many advanced aerodynamic features resulting in superb low speed handling and STOL performance. When SOE was formed in 1941 the Lysander was seen as a perfect solution for clandestine missions with the French Resistance and 138 Special Duties squadron was formed for this task. Painted matt black and always operating within a week of the full moon for navigation purposes, the Lysanders transported 101 agents into France, and recovered 128 during the period from 1941 – 1944.
