Description
End of an era
A Super constellation “Connie”, serene against an evening sky. The Connie, instantly recognisable with its unique triple fin design, which was incorporated so that the height of the aircraft was kept low enough to fit in existing hangars. The US Air Force used it during world war two as a transport aircraft as well as serving as a civil air liner with nearly all major US airlines. Though it was a brilliant aircraft the days of the piston aircraft were gone and it was quickly obsolete as jet air liners such as the Comet and the Boeing 707 came into service. However, it does still hold some records, an Eastern Airlines Constellation still holds the record for a New York to Washington flight from lift off to touchdown at just over 30 minutes. The record was set prior to speed restrictions by the FAA below 10,000 ft.
