Mustang - Series
High, wide and handsome
A high level study of the P51D Mustang in it's element. Probably the best fighter aircraft (after being fitted with the RR Merlin) developed during WW2, altho' the FW 190D and Me262 came pretty close. The Mustang gave sterling service both as high-level escort and in free ranging low level strike missions. An icon of it's time and still a thrill to watch today - some 300 remain (in varying states of repair) of the more than 15,000 built.
The aircraft is finished in the colour scheme of Col. John Landers CO of 78th Fighter Group based at Duxford during WW2. Unfortunately this aircraft was lost at the 2011 Duxford Legends airshow - involved in a mid-air with a Skyraider - the P51 pilot bailed out successfully at extremely low altitude, the Skyraider landed safely with some 6-8ft of the starboard wing missing.
Have been interested in photography since just after WW2, when film became freely available again, using Kodak Autographic equipment. Graduated, in the 50's, to 35mm and was involved in photographic work during my 17 yrs as RAF aircrew - navigator. Since retirement and migrating to Canon digital equipment have been involved with two of my sons and one grandson in a considerable amount of photographic activity, particularly composite images. Now producing digital art prints with the major emphasis on classic warbird aviation. With son, Duncan, now becoming a well-known and published wild life photographer we have started, in 2017, a new gallery reflecting Scottish sea birds - and 'feathered' flight
