Description
Pacific Patrol
The P38 (Lightning) fighter saw service in European and Pacific WW2 theatres. The aircraft first flew in 1939 and was in continuous production at Lockheed until 1945 with close on 10,000 examples of the various Mks issued to US Forces. An unmistakable profile with the twin engine, twin tail set up resulting in an elegant aircraft.
This image shows elements of the 475th FG, on patrol, the group operating in the New Guinea/Philippines area in the latter part of the war. It was particularly suited to the vast areas patrolled in the Pacific due to the twin engines and large fuel capacity. The mix of 20mm cannon and 0.5 machine guns in a central pod was particularly deadly and resulted in over 1,800 combat kills against Japanese sorties in the Pacific.
