Description
The Ghibli is an Italian air force ground attack aircraft, brought into service in 1989 and is still in active service today with the Italian and Brazilian air force. The role of the aircraft is battlefield interdiction, close air support and reconnaissance missions.
The name, the Ghibli is taken from the hot dry winds of the Libyan deserts and is traditional in the Italian air force. It was designed to replace the Aeritalia G-91 and F-104 with new key design features such as accessibility and survivability where the aircraft should be able to operate with at least one system failure and the aircraft should be able to operate on damaged runways. The Paniva Tornado was used to draw experience and ideas from when developing the aircraft as the roles are very similar and the Tornado had shown itself to be a capable aircraft.
The aircraft saw operational deployment with 103 squadron in the Italian air force where six were sent to operations in Bosnia in 1995 as part of Operation Deny Flight and following this to support the IFOR peacekeepers in Bosnia. They were also used in the Kosovo conflict in 1999.
More recent deployment was in 2009 they were sent to relieve the Italian Tornado squadrons in Afghanistan in the role of reconnaissance. Also, the aircraft was deployed in Libya during 2011 military intervention.
