Description
WW1 Series - Escadrille Lafayette - Hunters
The Escadrille Lafayette was formed by volunteer American pilots in 1916 and operated under the ‘control’ of the French Air Force. Flying various types of Nieuport and Spad aircraft the American pilots were most successful with 57 confirmed victories, losing nine pilots in these actions. Seen here in hunter mode a pair of Nieuports search for prey in the summer clouds. As fighter pilots do in all air arms the squadron adopted a couple of pets – two lion cubs named Whiskey and Soda, plus ca change !
When the US entered WW1 in Feb 1918 the Escadrille was absorbed into the American Air Arm as 103 Sqdn.
