Description
Douglas DC3
Dakota - the workhorse of all the Allied forces during WW2 and for much of the worlds Air Forces thereafter. Introduced in 1935 and still flying in many countries the DC3 is one of the most resilient designs of all time.
The aircraft shown is a Dak of No. 267 Sqdn RAF carrying the Pegasus emblem of that Sqdn. This specific aircraft was built in 1942, issued to the USAAF, then to the RCAF and purchased in 1971 by RAE Farnborough for research duties. Subsequently obtained by the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and is still flying regularly and cleared for para drops as seen at many UK air shows.
267 Sqdn carried out one of the most amazing ops in WW2 when in April 1944 they flew a DC3 to Lublin, in occupied Poland, from Brindisi in Italy, where they dropped off two agents, and picked up the then CO of the Polish underground forces and his Intelligence Staff. The aircraft returned to Brindisi and then made the long transit to the UK via Gibraltar and the Bay of Biscay - big pat on the back for the nav! That a/c was fitted with no less than 8 long range tanks and was capable of flights in excess of 18hrs - truly an iconic aircraft.
